Mrs Ward made so much money from her novel Robert Elsmere that she felt guilty. This one would distance her from the aristocratic comforts she had achieved, by portraying the life of a working class man, set in the industrial city of Manchester. She did research on the Chartist movement of the 1830s, and in the industrial north. There is an echo here of Charles Kingsley's Alton Locke (1850). David and his sister are orphans, being raised by an aunt and uncle in the country. It's a stark and cruel environment. David runs away to the city to make his fortune, and promises to bring his sister soon. He learns the book shop trade, educates himself, acquires his own shop, writes deistical pamphlets. There is an unexpected inheritance. When David and his sister are re-united, she is a mature and feisty woman determined to go her own way. She ends up in Paris, living an unconventional life. David tries to rescue her. In Paris, he has an affair with a young bohemian artist. This section of the novel is a "Storm and Stress" episode in which David thinks of suicide. A wide range of religious characters appear, from strict Evangelical, to liberal Anglican, to French Catholic. A virtuous Evangelical spinster intervenes in both lives, with a bittersweet outcome.Product details
